The 1950s were the first full decade after the end of World War II and is remembered as a prosperous time of recovery from the Great Depression of the 1930s and the war years of the 1940s. Everyone collectively breathed a sigh of relief. It was a time of new styles that broke with the past, like mid-century modern design, and many firsts, inventions, and discoveries that would become symbolic of the 20th century as a time of looking forward. The veneered oak bureau facing the entrance is typical of the furniture of the reconstruction period (as can be seen in the Perret model apartment in Le Havre). You will find a collection of La Maison Française magazines in it
The Métropole chair (also called Standard) was designed by Jean Prouvé for industrial production. Prouvé liked to swing on a chair. He had observed that the maximum effort was sustained at the back, and that chairs always break at the junction between the seat and the back of the chair: this explains the choice of solid, folded sheet metal back posts.
Floor lamp, armchair and coffee table are furniture created in 1958, reissued on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the opening of the first IKEA shop. (if you're interested in IKEA's history watch the "The 70 Year Evolution of the IKEA Living Room" here). The Oskar modular storage unit is Danish and was an innovative example of the Scandinavian style that has been popular since that time.
The N'gil mask, a Fang tribe's secret society, comes from Gabon.
The poster for the Leger exhibition was purchased locally in 1954 (Fernand Leger was born in Normandy in Argentan).
Masson's Cat-Bird (1951) is a testimony of the autumn of surrealism, while Vostan's collage is typical of the "lyrical" abstraction of the 1950s. On your way out, say hello to Charles Eames' bird (actually a bird made for hunters that the Eames, lovers of "American Folk Art", had brought back from a trip to Illinois).
